Gravity Probe B (GP-B)
Jan

Gravity Probe B (GP-B)

Speaker: Dr. Sasha Buchman

Institution: Stanford University

In 2011, nearly fifty years after its inception, the Gravity Probe B satellite mission delivered the first measurements of how a spinning gyroscope precesses in the gravitational warping of spacetime.

High-dimensional sensing for autonomous driving

High-dimensional sensing for autonomous driving

Speaker: Dr. Alberto Stochino

Institution: Perceptive, Inc.

Autonomous perception for driverless vehicles has set extremely high requirements on imaging sensors such as lidars, radars, and cameras. Perception processes like clustering, classification, and tracking for extracting accurate 3-D spatial information has led to an unsustainable escalation of sensor hardware complexity/cost while producing diminishing returns.

GPS

Speaker: Gaylord Green

Institution: NavAstro Company

There was a time before GPS when people would say, "I know where I am. Why do I need satellites to tell me where I am?”. This is the story of the creation, operation, modifications and worldwide acceptance of GPS. With help from the integrated circuit industry, GPS has become essential in many aspects of our daily lives.

Dark Matter, etc.

Speaker: Prof. John Lipa

Institution: Stanford University

For more than 100 years stellar motions in galaxies were known to be anomalous, that is, not easily explained by Newton’s law of gravity. The advent of Einstein’s General Relativity did not appear to change the situation.

to Aug 19

Pulsed Field Ablation: An Overview

Speaker: Dr. Raju Viswanathan

Institution: Cyberon, LLC

This talk presents a review of pulsed field ablation, also known as electroporation. In many clinical applications, the therapy goal is to selectively destroy targeted tissue. A basic overview of this relatively new tissue ablation modality is provided and the technique is compared and contrasted with more conventional thermal approaches.

Ocean Current Measurements with E&M Waves

Speaker: Dr. Suwen Wang

Institution: Hainan Tropical Ocean University

Ocean science is a fast developing field partly due to increased global trade and environmental effects from climate change caused by global warming. Dr. Wang will briefly discuss the history of ocean science and technologies developed for the studies.

Physics of the Polar Auroras

Speaker: Dr. Shally Saraf

Institution: SN&N Electronics, Inc.

Plasma physics behind the coronal mass ejections and solar wind will be discussed. Bow shock and capture of plasma in the earth's magnetic field will be described to explain the Van Allen radiation belts and spectacular colors of the polar auroras.
